Detailed description of Washoe Golf Course

Washoe Golf Course is an 18-hole public course located in Reno, Nevada. The course is located high above Reno, with spectacular views of Reno from many locations. The course is a 6,695-yard par 72 for men and par 74 for ladies. It challenges the most experienced golfers while still being a good course for beginners.

Established in 1934, Washoe Golf Course is the oldest course in Nevada.

The course hosted its first professional tournament in 1946 and boasts the legendary Ben Hogan among its champions. In the decades since Washoe County Golf Course - affectionately nicknamed "The Shoe" - has undergone many changes. But, to this day, it has held its own as one of the most beautiful, playable tracks in the Truckee Meadows and remains a favorite for its club members, locals, and visitors alike. Tall trees line the fairways of this course. The front 9 is flat, and the back 9 is hilly.

Par for the course is 72. From the back tees, the course plays to 6,695 yards. From the forward tees, the course measures 5863 yards. The longest hole on the course is # 7, a par-5 that plays to 541 yards. The shortest hole on the course is # 3, a par-3 that plays to 127 yards from the back tees.

Watch out for # 12, a 475-yard par-4 challenge, and the #1 handicap hole on the course. The easiest hole at Washoe Golf Course is # 3, a 127-yard par-3.

As always this course delivers the best value in the area as far as price, ability to par/birdie and overall satisfaction. Sometimes the back nine gets crowded due to too many twosomes allowed to play. I wish the course marchal could remedy these backups with more authority. This of course if very aggravating- especially in the afternoon when it is hot out. I also wish they had a bunker warmup area but oh well. Beats the links courses any day-- I love all the trees here- and the fairways are always green. I would like to add that this was a great first 18-hole round of golf for my 13 year old son. It is not too long, and the greens are friendly.

Would travel: 0-10 Miles, Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: I would play again, Better than average course for the area, Bargain priced based on quality and competitive area pricing

Washoe Golf Course is a little gem, a county course nestled in the middle of the city of Reno, Nevada. Founded in the 1920s, the current course was built in the early 30s as a Work Progress Administration Project. Tree-lined fairways, and well-maintained fairways and greens, provide a good challenge for all levels of golfers. The front nine is fairly flat, but the back nine has more elevation changes and two very challenging long par 4 holes, 12 and 15. The staff is friendly and there is an nice little restaurant in the clubhouse.
